Karlsruhe, compared to other cities in Germany, has always exhibited a more progressive stance, fostering the growth of arts and culture and generating a vibrant ambiance. Stemming from Karlsruhe’s magnificent palace, the absence of an ancient quarter often leaves visitors befuddled. Being a relatively modern city, established in 1715, Karlsruhe does not possess the customary medieval structure seen in many other German cities. The city layout, conceived by Margrave Karl-Wilhelm of Baden with the palace as its locus and 32 streets spreading outwards, positioned it as an undivided city, with no barriers hence adopting an open-minded and progressive stance from its inception. The city centre’s placement in a defunct ammunition manufacturing facility even serves as an emblem of the never-ending progression of time.
