As you travel towards southwestern Uganda, enjoy a brief stop at the equator to capture photos at the monuments, stand in both the Southern and Northern hemispheres simultaneously, and engage in experiments that confirm the equator’s location.
Your next pause will be in Mbarara town for lunch, reaching the Rwenzori region by evening. Settle into your chosen accommodation for dinner and overnight stay, ready to start your Mountain Rwenzori trekking journey the following day.
Journey to Nyakalengija
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the second day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking adventure, report to the Rwenzori Mountain National Park headquarters for a briefing and to rent necessary equipment before starting the trails. Begin at Nyakalengija, following the path through plantations and the modest homes of the Bakonjo – the mountain inhabitants. The trail crosses the Mahoma River, leading to Nyabitaba hut, approximately 2,652m up Rwenzori Mountain.
The hike takes about 5 – 6 hours. From here, enjoy the scenic views of the portal peaks and Mount Kyniangoma. The Rwenzori Turaco, monkeys, and chimpanzees are common in this area. Conclude the second day of your Rwenzori Mountain trekking adventure with dinner and rest.
Depart Nyabitaba hut (2650 m) – Arrive at John Matte hut (3380 m)
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the third day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking adventure, descend the ridge to Mukubu River, then ascend through a bamboo forest towards John Matte hut – 3380m. Spend the afternoon climbing and navigating through boulders, ascending via the north side of Bukuju River through a giant heather forest. This hike lasts between 5 - 6 hours. Enjoy dinner and overnight at John Matte hut.
Depart John Matte hut (3380 m) – Arrive at Bujuku hut (3972 m)
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the fourth day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour, trek from John Matte hut (3380 m) to Bujuku hut (3977 m). Encounter a series of bogs, a common feature in this mountain area. Traverse Bigo bog and Lake Bujuku. This part of Mountain Rwenzori is home to the legendary ‘everlasting flower,’ said to remain on the plant for about 40 years. Spend the night at Bujuku hut.
Hike from Bujuku hut (3972 m) – Stop at Elena hut (4541 m)
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the fifth day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour, leave Bukuju hut and climb through moss-covered groundsel greenery, heading to Scott Eliot pass (4,372 m) between mountains Baker and Stanley. Proceed to Elena hut (4,540 m) for the night, preparing to ascend Mount Stanley the next day.
From Elena hut (4541 m) – Punta Margherita (5109 m)
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - Depart from Elena hut early morning, embarking on a hike to the Stanley plateau. Cross this in the northwestern direction, following the Margherita glacier to the summit, a 3-hour hike. Descend via Elena hut, proceeding to upper Kitandara lake, passing through thick mud to lower Kitandara lake, stopping at Kitandara hut. From here, climb Mount Baker or Mount Louig do Savoia to the peak – Vittorio Sella. A Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour is the ultimate safari adventure for avid sightseers.
Depart Kitandara hut – Stay at Guy Yeoman hut
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the seventh day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking adventure, proceed from Lake Kitandara, ascending to the Freshfield pass (4,282m). Hike along a ridge of high alpine mossy glades, then descend from the circuit amidst rocks and bogs. Enjoy the breathtaking panorama of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount of Savoy. Embark on a soggy trail leading to Bujongolo, Akendahi, and Kabamba rock shelters, where the Kabamba valley begins, leading to Guy Yeoman hut (3,261m). This hike can last up to 6 hours. This region of Mountain Rwenzori is surrounded by mountains, rivers, and beautiful greenery.
Depart from Guy Yeoman hut – Arrive at Nyabitaba hut
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the eighth day of your Mountain Rwenzori adventure, leave Guy Yeoman hut, hiking towards Nyabitaba hut. Descend along Mubuku River, past Kichuchu, a rock shelter, then join the original route down to Bujuku River. This hike lasts about 2-3 hours. Spend the night at Nyabitaba hut.
Descend back to headquarters – Return to Kampala
Rwenzori Mountains National Park - On the final day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking adventure, leave Nyabitaba hut in the morning, descending steeply off the ridge through lush vegetation to the mountain’s base. Proceed to the park headquarters to return any rented equipment. Begin the journey back to Kampala, arriving in the late evening. This concludes your 9-day Mountain Rwenzori trekking adventure.

The 9-day Rwenzori Mountain trekking safari takes adventurers to Uganda’s tallest mountain range, renowned for its permanently snow-capped peaks.
Participants will ascend to Margherita Summit, the highest peak in the range and the third highest in Africa. The ranges are part of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, home to over 70 mammals, 217 bird species, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics, and some of the world’s rarest vegetation.
