Originally, it is thought that there were around 30 monasteries, but today only six remain operational: the Great Meteoron Monastery, St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery, St. Stephen Monastery, Rousanou Monastery, Varlaam Monastery, and the Holy Trinity Monastery.
The origins of Meteora continue to be a source of fascination and study for many scientists who are dedicated to unraveling the secrets of its geological formation. In recognition of its significance, Meteora was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
