The Yala National Park is the country’s premier destination for wildlife viewing. Yala’s star attraction is undoubtedly the Leopard, and Yala Block I is believed to have the highest concentration of these big cats in the world.
Leopards however are elusive by nature, and we recommend a minimum of three to four game drives to have the best opportunities for good encounters. It is also one of the few places in the country where the endangered shaggy coated Sloth Bear can be seen. Asian Elephants are also encountered; lone bull elephants, a few iconic tuskers and small herds of females and calves maybe seen. Jackal, Sambar, Spotted Deer Buffalo, Wild boar and the Grey Langur are among the other larger mammals that may be seen. During the dry season which spans from June
September, large concentrations of Mugger Crocodile can be seen in the dwindling waterholes.

Initially recognized as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, Yala, together with Wilpattu, became the first duo of national parks in Sri Lanka in 1938. The park is prominent for its rich diversity of wildlife, playing a crucial role in the preservation of Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, and various species of waterfowl. The park, officially known as Ruhunu National Park, spans 126,786 hectares, with the Strict Natural Reserve (Block II) as a significant part. Block I, the most recognized part of the park, was established in 1938 and covers 14,101 hectares. Yala boasts significant populations and large gatherings of Elephants, Leopards, Spotted Deer, Sambhur, Crocodiles, Mongoose, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, among other animals. The area is a hotspot for birdwatchers, with over 130 species of birds, both resident and transient, recorded. The park features 7 Bungalows and several campgrounds within its territory.
