The Private Day Trip to the Central Zoo situated in Jawalakhel, Kathmandu, is nestled within Lalitpur District. The park is a crown jewel of the state, with the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) actively pursuing its development into a wildlife research and educational hub. In the year 1995, the management of this zoo, the only one present in Nepal and spanning six hectares, was entrusted to the Government of Nepal. Initially created as a private zoo by the late Rana Prime Minister Juddha Samsher in 1932, it changed ownership to the Government of Nepal following the political shifts in 1950 and later, was given to the NTNC in 1995. As of Chaitra 2067, the zoo boasts a collection of over 700 animals representing 108 distinct species. This includes 34 mammals, 51 birds, 9 reptiles and 14 fish species. The zoo also houses a variety of rare creatures like the One-horned Rhino, Bengal Tiger, Himalayan blue sheep, Himalayan griffon, kalij pheasant, and the striped hyena amongst others.
