Bhaktapur Durbar Square - 1:00 pm: An expert guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and drive you to Bhaktapur, a journey of about 45 minutes. Upon arrival, begin exploring these attractions:
55 Window Palace
The Palace of Fifty-five Windows, known in Prachalit, was constructed during the reign of Malla King Bhupatindra Malla, who ruled from 1696 to 1722 AD. It was completed in 1754 AD under his son, Ranjit Malla.
Vatsala Temple
Vatsala Temple was a stone temple dedicated to the goddess Vatsala Devi, featuring numerous carvings. It was renowned for its silver bell, called “the bell of barking dogs” by locals, as it caused nearby dogs to bark and howl when rung. King Ranjit Malla hung the colossal bell in 1737 AD, and it was used to signal the daily curfew. It was rung every morning during the worship of goddess Taleju. Although the temple was destroyed by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, the bell remains intact.
Statue of Bhupatindra Malla
The Statue of King Bhupatindra Malla, depicted in worship, stands on a column facing the palace. Among the square’s many statues, this one is considered the most magnificent.
Nyatapola Temple
In the Newari language, Nyatapola means five stories, symbolizing the five basic elements. It is the largest and tallest pagoda in Nepal, renowned for its architectural perfection and artistic beauty. The temple’s foundation is said to be wider than its base. It is open to the public once a year during Dashain. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Shiddhilaxmi, and the statues serving as bodyguards are arranged in five layers at the temple’s base. It reportedly took three generations to complete this temple, also known as Pancha Tale Mandira.
Bhairava Nath Temple
The Bhairab Nath Temple is dedicated to Bhairava, the fiercest form of Lord Shiva.
The World-Famous Golden Gate of Bhaktapur
The Golden Gate is considered the most beautiful and intricately molded example of its kind worldwide. It is adorned with a figure of the Hindu goddess Kali, Garuda (a mythical griffin), and two heavenly nymphs, along with monsters and other Hindu mythical creatures of remarkable intricacy. Percy Brown, a renowned English art critic and historian, described the Golden Gate as “the most lovely piece of art in the whole Kingdom; it is placed like a jewel, flashing innumerable facets in the handsome setting of its surroundings.” Erected by King Ranjit Malla, the gate serves as the entrance to the main courtyard of the Palace of Fifty-five Windows.
Lions Gate
This magnificent and beautiful gate was crafted by artisans whose hands were reportedly severed upon completion by the envious Bhadgoun king to prevent the creation of similar masterpieces.
Mini Pashupatinath Temple
The holy Shiva temple, known as the Mini Pashupati, is believed to have been built in front of the palace after a Bhadgoan king dreamed of it.
