Additional Information

With its status as one of Kathmandu Valley’s 8 UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites, the Pashupatinath Temple is a significant religious destination in Asia. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it’s one of the four major religious landmarks in the region. Though it was constructed in the 5th century, it’s believed to have originated at the dawn of the millennium when a Shiva lingam was discovered on site. Non-Hindu visitors are permitted to view the temple from the opposite side of the river. The temple’s inner sanctum houses a Shiva lingam while the largest Nandi the bull statue, the vehicle of Shiva, is stationed outside. There are hundreds of Shiva lingams within the compound. The Maha Shivaratri festival in spring draws thousands of devotees from Nepal and India alike.

Peaceful and humbling temple. - I wasn’t sure what to expect, I didn’t want to be obtrusive or mawkish, but the whole experience of the temple was one of serenity and was very humbling.
