The process of a Hindu funeral is a unique one when compared to other faiths. The tenet of reincarnation in Hinduism states that an individual’s karma dictates their next existence, ideally an improved one. The deceased in Hindu rituals are cremated on the shores of sacred rivers, with many Hindus aspiring to have their final rites performed at the Bagmati River near the Pashupati Temple. The Bagmati is regarded as sacred, and it is a local belief that the souls of those cremated there ascend directly to paradise.
The bereaved family observes a mourning period of 12 days post-cremation. During this time, they abstain from consuming certain vegetables and meats. The grieving family members must only dress in white garments, including shoes, and refrain from wearing anything made of leather. On the twelfth day, a Hindu priest presides over a commemorative puja ceremony, reciting specific mantras in memory of the deceased. Following this, the family is permitted to return to regular routines.
