Arrival in Lhasa
Lhasa Suburb Highlights: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery
Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si) - Today, you will visit two attractions in the Lhasa suburb. In the morning, we will take you to Drepung Monastery. In the afternoon, we will visit Sera Monastery. Be prepared for a long day of sightseeing under the intense Tibetan sun; bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
Tonight, we will host a welcome dinner to introduce you to your fellow travelers from around the world. It will be a great opportunity to meet people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.
Located about 8km west of central Lhasa, Drepung Monastery was once one of the world’s largest monasteries. The name Drepung means ‘rice heap,’ referring to the large number of white monastic buildings that once covered the hillside.
Sera Monastery is located in the northern suburb of Lhasa City. The monastery was named Sera, meaning wild rose in Tibetan, because the hill behind it was covered with wild roses when the monastery was built. From Monday to Friday, you can watch monks debating at Sera Monastery every afternoon.
Lhasa City Highlights: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street
Potala Palace - This morning, visit Potala Palace, which stands more than 3,700 meters above sea level, making it the highest palace in the world. From the top, known as the golden roofs, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Lhasa, including the mountain ranges, the Lhasa River, fields, villages, and the Jokhang Temple.
In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple, built during the 7th century by Sontsan Gambo. It features Buddhist prayer wheels, reclining deer, and golden sutra streamers. Many pilgrims pray in front of the monastery.
The circuit around Jokhang Temple is called Barkhor Street, a famous market for local handmade crafts and a great place to buy souvenirs.
