Located to the northwest of Kathmandu, it forms part of the Shivapuri National Park. The hike begins at the Nagarjuna Gate near the Balaju Bypass. It takes a 20-minute drive to reach the entry gate, followed by a 2-hour walk up the hill. Nagarjuna Hill is home to a renowned Buddhist stupa, accessible via a road that winds through Raniban (Queen of Forest).
The name ‘Nagarjun’ is derived from a mythological belief that Acharya Nagarjun meditated here. It is also referred to as Vindya Mountain. Visitors can experience tranquility in this natural setting, making it an ideal place for meditation. Key attractions include Buddha stupas, ancient caves, and the Jamacho viewpoint (2128m), known for its breathtaking Himalayan views. From here, one can admire the stunning vistas of Jugal, Ganesh Himal, and the Langtang region.
At the summit of Nagarjuna Hill, one can see the Kathmandu Valley, Swyambhu Hill with the iconic two eyes of Buddha, and Nuwakot with its Buddhist shrines and monasteries. Additionally, Nagarjun is home to the historical Nagarjun Palace, the former summer residence of Nepalese royalty.
