The National Museum, Nepal’s first public museum, which was initially an arsenal museum and a private collection of the Royal family and Rana Prime Ministers, didn’t open its doors to the public until 1938. Known initially as “Chhauni Silkhana“, it was rechristened as Nepal Museum in 1942, and ultimately given the name National Museum (Rastriya Sangrahalaya) in 1967. The museum, since its establishment, has managed to assemble thousands of antiquities, archeological, historical and culturally significant objects, and has achieved a significant standing as a storehouse of ancient Nepalese art, culture, sculpture, and painting.
In an army compound opposite the National Museum, is a spectacle that is likely to only fascinate military history enthusiasts. On display outside the museum are a two-person tank, Nepal’s inaugural Rolls-Royce, a gift from Queen Elizabeth II in 1961, and a Sky van transport plane.
