Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Lions Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and palace, recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s seven World Heritage Sites. UNESCO has also declared it the 8th Wonder of the World.
Surrounded by an extensive network of gardens and reservoirs, Sigiriya is rich in history. Since the 5th century BC, the fortress served as a rock shelter mountain monastery, with caves prepared and donated by devotees to the Buddhist Sangha.
It is believed that the entire complex was constructed by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD), with most of the elaborate structures on the rock summit dating back to this period, including defensive structures, palaces, and gardens. There was even a royal bathing pool on the summit, which still collects rainwater.
A fascinating feature of Sigiriya is the Mirror Wall, originally polished so well that the King could see his reflection as he walked beside it. Today, the wall is partially covered with verses written by visitors, some dating back to the 8th century. The wall frescoes are also shrouded in mystery and the subject of many legends.
Whether interested in art and history or not, a visit to Sigiriya is essential to witness the breathtaking views.

Golden Temple of Dambulla - Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock rises 160 meters above the surrounding plains. There are over 80 documented caves in the area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, containing statues and paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses, including Vishnu and Ganesha. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square meters (23,000 sq ft). Depictions on the cave walls include the temptation by the demon Mara and Buddha’s first sermon.
Prehistoric Sri Lankans likely lived in these cave complexes before Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka, as there are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old in this area, near the Dambulla cave complexes.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Located in Kandy, a long-standing center of the Buddhist faith, the magnificent 17th-century Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic draws white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, daily.
In the Central Highlands, almost at the heart of the small island of Sri Lanka, lies Kandy City. The crown jewel of the city is the renowned Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth. ‘Maligawa’ translates to palace, and the temple is part of the palace complex. The entire complex is over three centuries old and has witnessed many kings’ rise and fall. It has seen bloody wars and peaceful reigns and remains one of the most historical places on the island.
