The area was designated a national park on August 12, 1997, after being declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The park was protected to safeguard the catchment of Minneriya tank and the surrounding wildlife. The tank, built by King Mahasen in the third century AD, is historically significant. The park serves as a dry-season feeding ground for elephants from the forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. Minneriya is one of Sri Lanka’s 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs).
