Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Kandy became the capital city of the island’s last independent kingdom in 1952, before succumbing to Portuguese, Dutch, and British invaders in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The sacred tooth relic was moved to Kandy, as it was believed that only the protector of the relic was fit to rule the country. The sacred tooth has been housed in the Sri Dalada Maligawa since the 16th century.

Royal Botanical Gardens - As Sri Lanka’s largest garden, the elegant and spacious 147-acre Peradeniya Gardens require ample time to explore. The garden features an impressive Avenue of Royal Palms and approximately 4,000 plant species. The 10,000 or so trees, many of which are tropical timber trees, are mature and towering. Yala National Park - Yala National Park is renowned for its high density of leopards, possibly the highest in the world. Visitors can also see elephants, with solitary males during dry months and large herds in the wet season. Sloth bears are another major attraction. The park is home to mammals such as wild boars, several deer species, and wild buffalo. A variety of reptiles and numerous crocodiles can be found here. As is common in Sri Lanka, there is a rich diversity of birdlife, including migratory species like flamingos. Yala is one of the few places where the critically endangered black-necked stork can still be seen. The park’s unique habitat diversity includes dense jungles, lagoons, open plains, and a stunning sea front. Large, stark boulders dominate the horizon, and the elegant leopards can often be seen basking atop sun-baked rocks.

Ramparts of Galle Dutch Fortress
Galle Dutch Fort - Galle’s strategic location along major sea routes made it a significant part of the island, attracting merchants and vessels worldwide. By 1502, Galle fell to Portuguese invaders led by Lourenço de Almeida. During their occupation, they built a fort to maintain control over Galle. Around 1640, the Dutch East India Company took over, heavily fortifying the fort. In 1796, the British seized control of the fort but preserved its structure. It remained their administrative capital until Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948.
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project - One of Sri Lanka’s key breeding spots for endangered sea turtles. The sandy beaches serve as a sanctuary for various marine turtles, including loggerheads and leatherbacks. The small turtle hatchery, established in 1994, promotes responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs from fishermen to discourage poaching and egg sales. Visitors learn about the importance of turtle conservation and may even have the opportunity to release newborn turtles into the ocean.
