Negombo, Sigiriya (Lion Rock)
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky,” which is perhaps the most remarkable single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock due to the enormous lion that once stood at the fortress entrance. Within its triple-moated defense, the massive rock rises almost vertically to a height of 500ft. At its summit are the remnants of what was once a grand palace and gardens, complete with a swimming pool. One of the stairways features the only known ancient Sinhala secular paintings, preserved as life-sized frescoes of damsels in their original vibrant colors.
Pidurangala Rock - Pidurangala Rock offers stunning views and beautiful sunrises.
Minneriya National Park - Elephant safari in Sri Lanka.
Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa - Kings ruled Sri Lanka’s central plains from Polonnaruwa 800 years ago when it was a bustling commercial and religious hub. The archaeological treasures from that era still provide a vivid picture of the city’s former glory. The archaeological park is a joy to explore, with hundreds of ancient structures—tombs, temples, statues, and stupas—concentrated in a compact area. The Quadrangle alone makes the visit worthwhile.
Kandy
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The hill capital, known for the annual Perahera festival. The last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings was surrendered to the British in 1815. Kandy exemplifies Buddhism’s influence in Sri Lanka today, with temples, shrines, and monasteries preserving Buddhist traditions throughout the city.
Royal Botanical Gardens - Sri Lanka’s largest botanical garden.
Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya Town Hall - Known as the ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is set against stunning backdrops of mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and tea plantations. It is considered one of the coldest places on the island, resembling an English spring day, although temperatures drop at night.
Throughout Nuwara Eliya, you’ll see evidence of British influence, with houses resembling country cottages or Queen Anne-style mansions.
Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden - Renowned tea factory and garden.
Ella
Ella Rock - The train ride from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the most scenic in the world. This unforgettable journey starts from Nanuoya, the last royal capital, and ends in Ella, a tranquil, picturesque village in Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
Udawalawe
Udawalawe National Park - Located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park was established to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River and to protect the reservoir’s catchment area.
Mirissa
Mirissa Beach - Mirissa is a major beach destination in southern Sri Lanka, offering beautiful beaches, surf waves, whale watching, and excellent bars and restaurants. Although Mirissa has become more crowded in recent years, there are still plenty of spots to enjoy a fresh coconut from a hammock while watching the sunset.
Whale Watching Club - Whale and dolphin watching in Mirissa.
Bentota and Colombo
Galle Fort Lighthouse - After checking out of Mirissa, head to Galle, where you can see stick fishermen and the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then, continue with a tour of Bentota and Colombo.
