Ussangoda National Park - Ussangoda is a unique coastal area known for its lack of trees due to serpentine rock containing toxic heavy metals. Only specific smaller plants have adapted to this soil. According to Ramayana legends, there are two explanations for Ussangoda’s barrenness. After meeting Sitadevi, Lord Hanuman provoked King Ravana and his Rakshasa army, resulting in Hanuman’s tail being set on fire. Hanuman then torched parts of Ravana’s empire with his burning tail, and Ussangoda is said to be one of these scorched areas. Additionally, legend has it that Ussangoda plateau was once used as an airport by King Ravana for his Dandumonara peacock chariot before Hanuman destroyed the landing site.
