Kalalea Mountain, Kauai Rock Climbing - Before embarking on the journey to explore the stunning beaches on this tour, take a moment to stop and admire the Kalalea Mountain Range.
Moloa’a Beach - Do you remember the 1963 show Gilligan’s Island? This charming beach served as the filming location for the first season!
Enjoy a walk on the beach where Gilligan and his crew began their adventure.
Kāhili Beach - Also known as Rock Quarry Beach due to a former rock quarry nearby, Kahili Beach is a secluded rural beach with no amenities, just pure natural beauty.
If time permits, wade through the stream if it’s low enough and explore the far left side of the beach. There’s a massive rock to climb for a spectacular view of the bay.
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge - Situated at the end of a picturesque peninsula, the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for various local seabirds. Depending on the season, thousands of birds can be seen on the cliffs or soaring in the skies. In the waters below, keep an eye out for spinner dolphins and monk seals in their natural environment.
Kauapea (Secret) Beach Trail Head - Enjoy a brief, 15-minute hike to the shore where a stunning and secluded white sand beach awaits. Why is it called a secret, you ask?
This location was relatively unknown in the past, making it a favored nudist beach for hippies. However, it’s not so secret anymore.
Today, the beach is known by its Hawaiian name, Kauapea, and is celebrated for its breathtaking beauty.
Anini Beach - It’s time to bring out the snorkel gear! Anini Beach features the largest coral reef in Hawai’i and is regarded as one of the top snorkeling spots in Kaua’i.
Hanalei Valley Lookout - As you drive towards Hanalei, you’ll notice a small shopping center for Princeville on your right and a scenic viewpoint on your left.
Stop for a stunning view of Hanalei Valley, with a patchwork of taro fields below and lush mountains in the background.
Okolehao Trail - The Okolehau Hike is a challenging 5-mile trek with significant elevation gain.
However, if you’re looking for a quick walk, hike the first half mile of the trail until you reach an electric pole.
There, you’ll find an overlook of the Hanalei Valley.
Hanalei - Hanalei is a delightful seaside town with a renowned pier, dining options, and shopping.
While visiting, it’s an excellent spot to enjoy lunch or gather picnic supplies for a meal on the pier.
Kahalahala Beach - Just beyond Hanalei lies a small beach called Kahalahala. The trail descends into a wooded area before emerging at a beautiful, pristine beach.
This is where Nellie Forebrush sang “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” in the musical South Pacific.
Lumaha’i Beach - This expansive, white sand beach is one of Kauai’s most stunning. However, the steep sand slope creates a strong undertow and powerful waves that break directly on the sand.
Tunnels Beach - Tunnels is the ultimate snorkeling and diving beach. There’s plenty to explore here, with underwater lava tubes teeming with sea life.
In fact, Tunnels is consistently ranked as one of the best snorkeling spots on the island.
Haena Beach Park - Strong ocean currents make Ha’ena Beach less suitable for casual swimming. In fact, you might even spot surfers riding the waves.
Wet and Dry Caves, Kauai - There is a cave called Maniniholo. It’s the remains of an ancient lava tube, a testament to Kauai’s fiery volcanic history!
Limahuli Garden and Preserve - If hiking isn’t appealing, consider a leisurely stroll in the Limahuli Botanical Garden, located next to Ha’ena State Park.
The garden is home to numerous endangered plants and showcases native Hawaiian flora and fauna.
Ha’ena State Park - Ha’ena State Park is situated at the end of the road.
This popular state park features the beautiful Ke’e Beach and the Kalalau Trail—one of the most challenging hikes in Hawai’i. The 11-mile trail takes you along the steep cliffs of the Na Pali Coast.
Hanalei - Now, the journey back to Kapa’a begins with two stops along the way. First, return to Hanalei to visit the historic pier.
Hanalei Pier - Dating back to the late 1800s, Hanalei Pier extends into Hanalei Bay and has been featured in several films, such as Beachheads, South Pacific, and more recently, George Clooney’s The Descendants.
Aloha Ola Farms – Farmstand @ Anaina Hou Community Park - This farm-to-table fruit stand offers delightful tropical smoothies, fresh juices, and other delicious frozen treats. They also provide a wonderful selection of local fruits and vegetables.
Kapaʻa - After enjoying a refreshing treat, the journey back to Kapa’a continues.
On the return drive, you’ll hear stories about King Kamehameha and his attempts to conquer Kaua’i.
