- Filippoi - Following the Battle of Filippoi in 42 BC, the city was established as a Roman colony and gained prominence due to its strategic position on the Via Egnatia.
A notable era was in 49 or 50 CE when Apostle Paul visited Filippoi and established the first Christian Church in Europe, marking the city as a significant center of Christianity. During the Byzantine period (963-969 CE), the city’s fortifications, including its towers and the acropolis wall, were reconstructed.
Excavations in Filippoi began in 1914, led by the French Archaeological School. Post-World War II, the Greek Archaeological Service and the Archaeological Society undertook systematic excavations. Archaeological research continues today, conducted by the Greek Archaeological Service, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the French Archaeological School. Artifacts from these excavations are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Filippoi.
- Kavala - After departing from Filippoi, the next destination is the beautiful city of Kavala. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the Step where Apostle Paul preached, admire the impressive arches, and then proceed to Panagia to visit Imaret, Mohamed Ali Square, and his house. Enjoying local cuisine at one of Kavala’s restaurants is a delightful way to conclude the visit before returning to Thessaloniki.
