Aktau Mountains - The Aktau limestone mountains are an open-air geological museum. They are among the most fascinating and visually striking tourist attractions in the Altyn-Emel State National Natural Park. In Kazakh, Aktau means the White Mountains. From a distance, the mountains appear white, but up close, you can see exposed multi-colored dome rocks and towers made of layered colors, interspersed with dry canyons filled with calcite crystals. The landscape is ever-changing, featuring bastions, towers, small towns, inaccessible castles, and endless canyons.
Katutau Mountain - The volcanic Katutau Mountains, meaning “frozen” or “severe mountains” in Kazakh, are another highlight of the Altyn-Emel National Park. Katutau is the largest and highest desert mountain range in Altyn-Emel, with peaks reaching up to 1630 meters. These lava mountains are the result of significant volcanic activity in the area. The solidified lava has formed into unique and bizarre shapes, making it a natural monument.
