Besshatyr, standing 195km north of Almaty, can be translated as the ‘five hills’ from Kazak and appears to be an ancient necropolis, marking its importance as the major ethnographic and archaeological hub in Altyn Emel National Park. Situated on the vast valley of the northern bank of the Ili river, Bes Shatyr was considered a holy place by the ancient inhabitants and selected as a burial site by Saki (Scythe) tribes, showing its utilization for centuries by differing nomadic generations.
