Crossing Borders and Boundaries

The Kazungula Border Safari was an adventure that began with the thrill of crossing borders, both geographical and personal. As a wildlife photographer, I have always been drawn to the untamed beauty of Africa, and this journey promised to be a unique blend of landscapes and wildlife encounters. The day started early, with pickups from Livingstone, Victoria Falls, or Kasane, Botswana. I was picked up from Livingstone, and the drive through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park was a gentle introduction to the wonders that lay ahead. The park, with its lush greenery and occasional sightings of wildlife, set the tone for the adventure.

Upon reaching the Kazungula border, the process of getting stamps on our passports and checking visas was a reminder of the diverse cultures and histories that converge in this region. The new and famous Kazungula Bridge, a marvel of modern engineering, was our gateway into Botswana. Crossing it felt like stepping into a new world, one where the promise of the wild was palpable.

Into the Heart of Chobe

Once in Botswana, the real adventure began. Chobe National Park, renowned for its vast concentrations of wildlife, was our destination. The river safari across the Chobe River was a mesmerizing experience. The water shimmered under the African sun, and the banks were alive with the movement of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. As we glided along the river, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the land and its inhabitants.

The game drives through Chobe were equally exhilarating. The park is home to one of the largest populations of lions and elephants in Africa, and witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was a humbling experience. The thrill of spotting a pride of lions lounging in the shade or a herd of elephants marching across the savannah is something that never fades, no matter how many safaris one has been on.

A Night Under the Stars

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we set up camp within the park. The night was filled with the sounds of the wild, a symphony of nature that lulled us to sleep. Dinner was a communal affair, with stories shared over a hearty meal and drinks. The camaraderie among fellow travelers, each with their own tales of adventure, added to the magic of the night.

The following day, after a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a full-day game drive. The morning light cast a golden hue over the landscape, and the park came alive with activity. From the graceful giraffes nibbling on acacia trees to the playful antics of baboons, every moment was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of this region.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the border, our hearts full of memories and our cameras brimming with images. The Kazungula Border Safari was more than just a journey through stunning landscapes; it was a testament to the beauty and resilience of the natural world, a reminder of why I fell in love with Africa in the first place.
