Additional Information

In the early days of May, a mother bear may guide her year-old cubs to the hide area. Despite being a year old, they are at risk from male bears, a danger they are aware of and can evade. Yearling cubs, although larger than newborns, are still noticeably smaller than their mother. The months of August and September offer the ideal opportunities for photographing cubs as mothers regularly bring both newborn and year-old cubs to the hide area. Like all bears, cubs are omnivorous, with half of their diet consisting of meat, supplemented by berries which make up about a third of their overall food consumption. At this point in their lives, yearling cubs are learning the foundations of living independently. Their behavior can seem uncertain, questionable and even comical when compared to mature adult bears.
