The lake is renowned worldwide as the site of the greatest bird spectacle on earth, with countless fuchsia pink flamingos, often numbering over a million or even two million. They feed on the plentiful algae that flourish in the warm waters. Scientists estimate that the flamingo population at Nakuru consumes approximately 250,000 kg of algae per hectare of surface area annually.

As of 2009, the park boasts more than 25 eastern black rhinoceros, one of the largest concentrations in the country, along with around 70 endemic southern white rhinos. There are also several Rothschild’s giraffes, relocated for safety from western Kenya starting in 1977. Waterbuck are abundant, with both Kenyan species present. Predators include Masai lions, cheetahs, and leopards, the latter being spotted more frequently in recent times. The park also features large pythons inhabiting the dense woodlands, often seen crossing roads or hanging from trees.
