The Serengeti hosts the world’s largest animal migration, known as the “Great Migration.” Over 1.7 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebras, and 200,000 antelopes travel from the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti northward through the “endless plains” to Kenya’s Masai Mara. The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word “siringit,” meaning “endless plains.”
Serengeti to Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square kilometers, with sides up to 600 meters deep. It is home to approximately 30,000 animals at any given time. The Crater rim, over 2,200 meters high, has its own climate. From this high vantage point, the tiny shapes of animals can be seen moving around the crater floor below. Clouds often hang around the rocky rim, and it is one of the few places in Tanzania where it can be chilly at night.
