The Best Way to tour Ketchikan - We had such a good time with Rick as our guide. He clearly loves Alaska and Ketchikan and was able to communicate so many interesting bits of information as he showed us many of his favorite places. We especially loved Settlers Cove, where we saw salmon spawning and a mama bear and her two cubs. The animal display at the Trading Post at Potlach Totem Park was pretty cool as well.

Truly great day in Ketchikan. - Rick was fantastic! He apologized for substituting for Bernie, but there was no need to apologize. He knew his stuff, and he was a lot of fun. We told him that we were only interested in nature and wildlife, so he drove us straight to Settler’s Cove. He dropped us off (he wasn’t allowed to give a tour within a national park) and we walked through a stunning forest path to a beach, as well as to a beautiful waterfall, in less than thirty minutes. Then we went to a different beach to hunt whales (no luck). From there, we went to a stream filled with salmon, and were able to find a black bear. At the end, he dropped us off at the trailhead of Rainbird Trail, adjacent to the U of Alaska campus. The two of us hiked for over an hour in a spectacular forest, letting us out near the port. Wonderful day. Highly recommend.

Disappointing, Misleading, Lackluster Response From Owner - Unfortunately, I was incredibly disappointed in Orca Song Tours. I emailed the owner, Bernie, to express my concerns. She apologized, but did not offer me an option for booking something else next year as a compensation and did not offer a rebate or refund. While I see that she has changed her website, and I’m sure she is quite a nice person, our tour was not what was advertised. Here is my letter to her and her response. —— Dear Bernie, Most tour companies wish to hear of problems with tours before they read about it in a review, hence this email. I have waited some months to see if I still felt as strongly about the disappointment as I did the day of the tour. When we booked with you, under the name (redacted), we came off the Royal Princess the last week of May. I anticipated a tour with you, specifically, as your website implies “I’ve grown up here in Ketchikan and boy do I have some great stories to tell! Can’t wait to meet you and show you around my hometown.” I anticipated a tour with someone with Native Alaskan heritage, as your website highlights that. Our tour guide told us you were fishing. He was a previous taxi driver, and I apologize, but I forgot his name. He was a very nice man, very polite, indeed very thoughtful. Unfortunately, he was not very knowledgeable about Native Alaskan things, which is why we booked a tour with your company. He was early to pick us up. As we were early too, the tour started early and we were about to see a couple sites, including the totem park and a well known bear viewing site, with absolutely no other people around. That was wonderful. However, we anticipated seeing everything we saw through the eyes of a Native Alaskan, and that was not what we got. He could not tell us anything about the totems, except what was written on signs. Essentially, we got a taxi ride to the park, with no narrative of any value. He had no idea about local flora, except salmon berries. He had very little knowledge of Alaskan heritage. He didn’t know about the fishing in the area, or ecology, or geology, or town history. He kept saying “I’ll have to ask the owner.” I was interested in his opinions of how Princess has changed the town, but I really didn’t care about the neighborhood in which he lived, and I REALLY didn’t want the details about how his wife was abused. All in all, the drive was nice, which was mostly what we got from a very nice man. We were willing to pay $400 to tour with you, not someone without your clan and Alaskan knowledge. And while I also know that things come up, and you might not be able to conduct a tour, your website should not imply that you will be meeting us to show us your town. Also, we did not get to “Experience luxury travel in Ketchikan in one of our two top-of-the-line luxury vans equipped with premium speakers and TV.” I visit Alaska on occasion, and always book private tours. I will even be in Ketchikan next year and possibly the year after. This was the first time I could afford to book a tour of this cost, and I felt your tour merited the expense. I was so very disappointed. I will wait for your response before posting comments to Trip Advisor and other sites. Kindly, Tracey Quade Her response: I am so sorry about the bad experience you had. I do appreciate the heads up and I will make sure that it doesn’t happen again. Thank you for your input. Bernie.
