Fascinating and educational insight into Tlingit culture. - Saxman village dance presentation and totem park. A very well-presented tour. The guide, Yeil, gave us a lot of insight into Tlingit life, tradition and culture. The dance show was amazing, especially as it included several different generations so that the young maintain their culture. The way that the youngsters had been taught and fully understood the meaning of the different dances was clearly evident. The totem poles were fantastic, Yeil explained the meaning behind each pole and we were also able to see a traditional carver at work who gave us an explanation of the type of wood that is used and carving techniques. All in all an excellent experience that we would happily repeat.

Ketchican tour was awesome! - The tour in Ketchican was terrific along with our guide Emily. Emily is very knowledgeable about the area and took time to show us a nesting eagle. The culture center was my favorite part of the tour. Tasting the area food and soda was a plus. The lumberjack show was fun as in engaged the audience.

Recommend if you are curious about Alaskan native history - The native dancing and totems were great. Kordell was a great storyteller and told us the stories of the totem poles. We also got to paint ornaments and learned a bit about native art and culture from Tamara. The flow of the day was a bit odd. They didn't really explain the food well and we had to ask questions to figure out how they related to native culture. They should show the video first then explain the food and significance of it.

Do the Lumberjack Show on your own, skip the culinary tasting - The lumberjack show is 5* 100% but you can easily go on your own, and you shouldn't miss it. But I would skip this tour. The culinary tasting is not what it's touted as, there is no chef preparing a 3-course meal, it's some tortilla chips and a cracker with salsa and salmon and crab dips. Still not sure how the tortilla chips & salsa connect with Alaskan culture because no one explained anything. They did provide sliced reindeer sausage, which was nice to try. The cheese was cubed though (and from Wisconsin lol) and they didn't provide small crackers, just a big hard tack cracker (no idea why or what it is) so you couldn't even make a little cracker/cheese/sausage app for yourself. We watched the chef drop ingredients into a pot to make halibut stew -- not really a demonstration. We did get to eat some though, and it was good. They also give you a berry pie that I have to assume is made from locally picked berries because again, nothing was explained. I don't even know what kind of berries they were. I had to ask about the crab dip because even in their quick "this is this and that is that" they skipped it. Kudos to the locally-sourced sodas and beers though. There was a video about the descendants of Saxman people but we didn't get a lot of information about the original history. We got just a few minutes to take in some of the artwork. You'd be better served to visit the Saxman village itself and take in their dancing, totems and more information about their culture. You won't miss the tasting.
