Kalinjar translates to the subjugator of time. Mythology states that Lord Shiva, one of the three supreme divinities, swallowed the poison (Halahal emerging from the stir of the vast sea, causing his throat to turn blue). Hence, he ventured to Kalinjar to conquer ‘Kal’ ( the deity of death) achieving immortality. From that point onwards, this hill has been deemed a sacred location. The surrounding natural beauty makes it a perfect spot for austerity and introspection. This notable fort came into recognition during the reign of the Chandela dynasty. It is situated near the globally recognized site of Khajuraho and is merely 130 kms away. The Fort is positioned on a secluded rocky hill where one can also explore grand temples dating back to the 10th century.
