Highlights
  • Khe Sanh Combat Base - The Siege began on January 21, 1968, when the North Vietnamese bombarded the base with over a thousand mortar rounds, rockets, and heavy artillery.
  • Vinh Moc Tunnel - Constructed in three levels (12, 15, and 23 meters deep), the tunnels took thirteen months to complete. From 1966 to 1971, three hundred people intermittently resided in the tunnels. Sixty-two families called the tunnels home, and remarkably, seventeen babies were born and spent their early years underground.

Visiting other places on Highway 1 and 9 to Vinh Moc and Khe Sanh:

Long Hung Church: This church in Quang Tri, Vietnam, endured eight continuous days of bombings by South Vietnamese and American forces during the Vietnam War. The church has remained untouched and essentially stands as it did immediately after the bombings, which turned it into a battlefield in 1972 between North and South Vietnam for 81 days and nights.

Doc Mieu Base: Little remains of this old American base except for a rusting tank and a sign. It once formed the backbone of the “Eagle Eyes of America” electronic monitoring fence.

Ben Hai River – Hien Luong Bridge of DMZ: Vietnam’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is the area around the former border between North and South Vietnam.

Cua Tung Beach: The beach features sparkling green water, silky sand, and gentle breezes throughout the year. It’s a great spot to relax and take beautiful photos.

Rockpile: This hill was a Marine outpost built atop a massive outcropping. Though it’s inaccessible, it remains a prominent sight from the highway.

Dakrong Bridge & Ho Chi Minh Road: Located midway along Highway 9, it marks the starting point of Highway 15, one of the main branches of the Ho Chi Minh Trail leading south to the A Shau Valley.

  • Hien Luong - DMZ Vietnam is the area around the former border between North and South Vietnam. Historically, it was a narrow strip of land extending from Laos to the coast, five kilometers on either side of the Ben Hai River, roughly along the 17th parallel.

Battle of Khe Sanh & Cầu Hiền Lương - The counter staff, Nga nguyen, is lovely and enthusiastic, and her Chinese is very good. The driver is the brother of the boss, and he has a high driving skill and is serious about helping. The tour guide is the translator of Borden and Clinton, Pham Cẩm Thạch. The history and language are extremely professional, and they care about the guests' questions and photo needs. The overall freedom of travel is high, and it feels good. The guide is happy to share stories

Educational, thought provoking and fantastic all day trip - I was blessed to have the extremely knowledge elder statesmen of the tour guides Mr Tam; having lived through the end of French colonialism and the war he was able to share not just facts learnt from a history book but also he shared his personal experiences and anecdotes - I could listen to Mr Tam all day; an amazing septuagenarian. Our driver Mr Tom was also excellent - collecting me from my hotel at 8am and returning me just after 6pm so it was a long day. Khe San FOB is now a tranquil place and it was hard to believe that only a few years ago it was the scene of a fierce battle and home to 1000s of US marines - i enjoyed exploring the trench system. After making our back down the hills it was time for lunch which tasty and cheap. Vinh Moc tunnels was an eye opening experience and totally different from the cu chi system in the south - I only needed to stoop and crawl. The system is ventilated by tunnels that lead to sea and served as an air raid shelter for locals so there were family compartments and even a maternity cave dug out of the tunnel wall - I’m told that they even had film shows down there. Our final port of call was the brigade spanning the 17th parallel - an historically significant place. As a former soldier and lover of history it was a worthwhile and fantastic day out

Very enjoyable tour with great driver & guide - This is a full day tour and you'll spend a long time in the car travelling, but it's worth it. Our driver Sam and guide Hai were amazing. Very good English, informative and friendly. The combat Base has about 5 old American aircraft and they have rebuilt the trenches and bunkers for you to explore. There is a small museum building with photos and exhibits. Was a little disappointed at the size of the place as was expecting a little more. The tunnels were amazing. Really enjoyed exploring them and getting a feeling of what it must have been like to have had to shelter in them for sometimes days. A few stops for photo opportunities along the way at key points. Would recommend

Wonderful Tour of the DMZ, Khe Sanh, and Vinh Moc Tunnels - This tour was very educational and a must-do when visiting the Hue area. If you are interested in history and the American/Vietnam War, you will want to take it. We started early in the morning with a pickup at our hotel with Mr. Trung. He was a great driver. We met up with our guide, Ms. Thach, who gave us a complete area history of the war. She was very knowledgeable. We visited all the major sites, Khe Sanh Combat Base, viewed the Rockpile, walked through a minority village, the DMZ area, some museums, and visited the Vinh Moc Tunnels. If you are visiting the area of Hue, this tour is worth setting aside a day to discover the area.

Great Tour If You Want To Learn More About The American/Vietnam War - I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in the American/Vietnam War. Our guide, Ms Thach, was very knowledgeable, and our driver, Mr. Trang, was great. We visited a few sites that were still standing from the war, toured Khe Sanh base, walked through an ethnic minority village, got a view of the rockpile, and walked through the Vinh Moc Tunnels. We walked over the bridge at the DMZ and toured some museums. It was a full day and very educational!

recommended! - Impressive Tour! We saw and learned a lot about the Vietnamese history between 1946 and 1975. To see the places first hand and talk to people that experienced the war gives a whole new quality to otherwise abstract knowledge. highly recommended with a small caveat: the tour is long and it is lots of driving - for us it took about 10 hours but was totally worth time and costs.
