A Journey Through Time: The Start of the Marathon

As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the stories that shaped our world. The Marathon & Eastern Attica in a Day Tour was an opportunity to walk through the pages of history, and I was eager to explore the landmarks at my own pace. The highlight of this leg of the journey was undoubtedly the Marathon Tomb. Standing before the burial mound of the 192 Athenian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Marathon, I felt a profound connection to the past. The story of Pheidippides, the legendary runner who inspired the modern marathon, resonated deeply with me. His cry of “NENIKIKAMEN” (We have won) echoed in my mind as I imagined the relief and triumph of that ancient victory.

Discovering the Myths and Legends of Attica

Leaving Marathon, we ventured south through the picturesque landscapes of vineyards and olive groves, heading towards the Temple of Artemis at Vravrona. This site, steeped in mythology, was a testament to the Athenians’ reverence for the goddess of the hunt. Our other driver, Isidoros, regaled us with tales of Artemis’ wrath and the rituals performed by young maidens in her honor. The temple’s ruins, though weathered by time, still exuded an aura of sacredness.

Continuing our journey, we arrived at the Archaeological Museum of Marathon. Nestled in a rural setting, the museum housed artifacts spanning from the Prehistoric to the Late Roman era. Each exhibit told a story, from the everyday lives of ancient Greeks to the grandeur of their civilization. It was a reminder of the rich tapestry of history that Eastern Attica holds.

Our next stop was the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, perched majestically on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. The temple’s columns stood as sentinels against the azure sky, a tribute to the god of the sea. The legend of King Aegeus, who leapt to his death from these cliffs, added a layer of poignancy to the breathtaking view. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the temple was bathed in a golden glow, a fitting end to a day steeped in history and myth.

The return journey to Athens was a leisurely drive along the southern coastal road, offering glimpses of the vibrant suburbs that line the Athenian Riviera. We stopped at a local tavern in Lagonisi, where the aroma of grilled seafood and the sound of the waves created a perfect setting for a traditional Greek meal. The hospitality of the locals, coupled with the flavors of the cuisine, was a delightful reminder of the warmth and generosity that Greece is known for.

Our final stop was at Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural wonder with its warm, mineral-rich waters. The lake’s unique conditions have made it a popular spa destination, and even a brief visit was enough to appreciate its allure. As we made our way back to the city, the Avenue of Poseidon offered a final glimpse of the Attican coastline, dotted with marinas and cafes.
