Highlights

DAY 1: MACHAME GATE & MACHAME CAMP.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 5,380 ft. to 9,350 ft.
Distance: 11 km/7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
From here, we will be driving from Moshi to the Machame Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. As we leave the park gate, we walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp and overnight.

DAY 2: MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA 2 CAMP.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 9,350 ft. to 12,500 ft.
Distance: 5 km/3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Heath
We leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge. On the Shira Plateau, we pass through heather and open moorlands, then cross a large river gorge to Shira 2 Camp and overnight

DAY 3: SHIRA 2 CAMP TO LAVA TOWER.

Mount Kilimanjaro - SHIRA 2 CAMP
Elevation: 12,500 ft. to 15,190 ft.
Distance: 7 km/4 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP
Elevation: 15,190 ft. to 13,044 ft.
Distance: 3 km/2 miles
Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft. tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for acclimatization.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 13,044 ft. to 13,106 ft.
Distance: 5 km/3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft. cliff. From the top of the Barranco Wall we cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One steeper climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization.

DAY 5: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 13,106 ft. to 15,331 ft.
Distance: 4 km/2 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position.

DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 15,331 ft. to 19,341 ft.
Distance: 5 km/3 miles
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours
Habitat: Arctic

UHURU PEAK TO MWEKA CAMP
Elevation: 19,341 ft. to 10,065 ft.
Distance: 12km/7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft.), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation: 10,065 ft. to 5,380 ft.
Distance: 10km/6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Moshi. The End…

Additional Information

The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary. Therefore this route is better suited for more adventurous folks or those with some high altitude, hiking or backpacking experience.

The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau. Here, many of Kilimanjaro’s routes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

Amazing once in lifetime experience - This amazing experience truly could not have happened had it not been for our great tour group! From picking us up and dropping us off to airport, to having our nights planned at a wonderful hotel , and of course having an experienced and wonderful team for the next week nonstop with us . Everyday we were hit with new challenges of the mountain yet the team we had stayed upbeat and ready to face the mountain blowing us away with strength as they raced ahead of us or stayed by us ready to help us get to the top . And once we finally reached the top as well as the bottom they were ready to celebrate with us and had a safari planned with experienced guides . I still a week later am in awe that they had everything planned and ready for us and that we made it to the top! I highly suggest going with this company as not only will you have a great time but you will feel like family while here in the beautiful land of Tanzania.

An amazing experience through the “Whiskey” Machane Trek Trail. - Who would have known this trail is considered one of the more difficult trails despite it having more days to complete and acclimatize; and I admit there were a couple of times that I almost called it quits but found the energy, determination, and deep strength within to push through, but all with the support of the amazing team from Sirikwa Travel. I would not change any part of the experience and will say it is not easy and it is tough some days more than others, but the support and energy generated by this team will feed your personal strengths and help you focus on your goal. Ole, the owner is absolutely great. He is responsive and will guide you what you need to do and need to bring prior to the trek activity. Ole was supportive with all the trek members of this group, and despite the hardship of the financial situation the entire trek team suffered, Ole remained connected, supportive and responsive. The guiding team was very helpful and made sure they checked your equipment prior to the trek to ensure you had all the necessary items and facilitated a briefing to explain the entire trek and what to expect. During the trek they were attentive, gave briefings every evening, and continued to encourage the trekking team to push forward. The young ladies of the guiding team were absolutely amazing and caring, but this also extends to the entire guiding team including all the porters. Every person was patience, accommodating, more willing to help and motivated us to complete the challenge. I am truly amazed and have so much respect for the whole guiding team and more so for the hardworking porters. I am truly grateful to every single person and I cannot remember everyone’s name but will give a shout out to those who I interacted more closely but extend the shout out to every single person of their team involved. Thank you Leon, Jonathan, Ray, Ola, Farida, Rehama, and Makere; you all are phenomenal guides! Joshua you are amazing and contiguous with your positive attitude and willingness to see things from a strength perspective. And I loved your wake up calls “HELLO” so calm and kind tone. And man you can sign and dance :). Anglestar (sorry I know it was a different name but we went with this one :). You were so sweet and attentive during our mealntimes; thank you. Rehena and Joshua - you were my strongest cheerleading team on summit day; THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! AND thank you for pushing through with me, specially when you saw me struggling to make it to Stela point; I know it crossed your mind I might not be able to make it but when you saw a bit of spark of energy come through you cheered me on restless and your songs gave me the extra boost of strength I needed. Eziquel, Joshua and gosh I was so tired and can’t remembered the name of the young man who helped me down (maybe Howard 😬); you guys were my angels. I still don’t know how I made it down that mountain because all is still a bit fuzzy and I only remember dragging my feet and falling asleep while I was waking but you all made sure to keep me safe and help me down. Thank you!!!! David; thank you so much for you kind greetings every single day and leading me to my tent. Thank you for coming back down a bit to meet the trekking teAm after you had already carried and set up ahead of us and were willing to check in with me to see if you could carry my pack; you and Eziquel are amazing I do not know how you could carry such loads so easy up that monster of a mountain. My total respects to you and all the porters. My sincere thank you and appreciation to you all. Thanks for making my experience as well all the other trekkers an unforgettable memory.

An incredible experience of a lifetime - I can't express my gratitude enough for this wonderful group of Humans that are now our family across the world. Ole Sirikwa & the rest of the Sirikwa family made sure we were supported, accommodated, and encouraged every step of the way. From the time our feet touched down in Tanzania, on and off the Mountain, the after trek excursions, up to the point we boarded the plane and was back in the states, we were in good hands. It says a lot when you not only feel safe but loved and welcomed when you are a stranger in a new place. The Love everyone gave us, was abundant and over flowing. Thank you to everyone that made this trip amazing, life changing, and full of wonderful memories. We had the opportunity to do excursions after our hike. A Safari, a visit to a waterfall and coffee plantation at the Chagga village, as well as a stay at the Maasai village.

One word: Perfection - We did it !!! We climbed during 7 days thraw Machame road,we saw beatiful landscapes, and it was very challenging to get my own body to the summit of Africa. I am not a sportiv woman and this was my first experience of trekking. But we could'nt do without the Sirikwa team !! There is no word to discribe them, no monney to give back what they offered to us;they encouraged us every day, carried our 20 kilos bags whereas my own body seemed so heavy at this altitude. They made everything to make us confortable: after our daily hike, we arrived at our camp for the night, and we were like princes and princesses : all our luggages were already in the tent , the tasty and consistent food was ready ( thank you to chef Richard aka Kili Mama !! ) I couldn't imagine to have this kind of confort at this altitude (and it was also my first experience of camping!!) Our guides Rahema, Paul, Johnathan were very carefull and gave us self confidence. They even checked every day our blood oxygen saturation!! Our porters were always lauthing, smiling, dancing , they participate to make this experience unique. I will always remember Haroun , who literrally carried me to go down after the summit!!!. Joshua, our waitor and singer , Richard, Daoudi, and the others. They were all very kind to us and made that this experience was not only a mountain hike, but also human unforgatable experience. I will recommand Sirikwa to all my friends and family!! And go go go to the summit if it is YOUR dream : you will never regret that.

Very Kind and very professional - Me and my friend Melanie booked a 7-day trek through Machame route to climb the Kilimanjaro with Sirikwa travel, a local company. Everything that was promised was there and much more. The team to accompany us along this long and sometimes really hard route was kind, knowledgeable, helpful and competent. We couldn’t have made it without them. A big thank you to our 2 guides, Jonathan and Linus, as well as to our cook, Richard, and our 7 porters (Robert, Omari, Esther, Joshua, Zacharia, Tito, Aaron). Thanks also to Oinoth and Mary who were lovely and organised everything!
