Chasing the Aurora: A Night Under the Arctic Sky
Drawn by the allure of the Northern Lights, I embarked on a journey from Kiruna to Abisko, eager to witness the celestial dance in the Arctic sky. Join me as I recount an unforgettable night under the stars, guided by the passionate team at Lights of Vikings.
The Journey Begins
The Arctic has always been a place of fascination for me, a former Arctic researcher turned travel writer. The allure of the Northern Lights, a celestial dance of colors across the polar sky, was something I had yet to experience in its full glory. So, when I heard about the Northern Lights Tour from Kiruna to Abisko, I knew it was time to venture back into the icy embrace of the Arctic.
The journey began in Kiruna, where I was picked up by the tour company, Lights of Vikings. Our guide, Cristina, was not just a guide but a passionate storyteller and photographer. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and as we drove towards Abisko, she regaled us with tales of the Vikings and the science behind the Aurora Borealis. The anticipation in the bus was palpable, each of us eager to witness the spectacle that awaited us.
A Feast Under the Stars
Upon arriving at the Abisko Mountain Lodge, we were treated to a sumptuous three-course dinner. The lodge, nestled in the heart of the Arctic wilderness, provided a cozy refuge from the biting cold outside. The meal was a delightful introduction to the flavors of Swedish Lapland, with reindeer as the star of the show. As we dined, the sky outside began to shimmer with the first hints of the Northern Lights.
Cristina, ever vigilant, led us outside to witness the spectacle. The sky was ablaze with colors, a mesmerizing display that left us all in awe. It was a moment of pure magic, one that words can scarcely capture. After the initial display, we returned to the warmth of the lodge, where Cristina’s colleague, Felipe, provided a detailed explanation of the phenomenon in Italian, much to the delight of our Italian-speaking companions.
Under the Arctic Sky
With dinner concluded, we set out once more, this time venturing a few kilometers away from the lodge to escape any lingering light pollution. Cristina expertly navigated the icy roads, her experience in the region evident in her confident driving. We stopped at a secluded spot, where she built a roaring campfire, providing warmth and a sense of camaraderie as we waited for the lights to return.
The temperature hovered just below freezing, a surprisingly mild night for the Arctic. As we sipped hot tea and nibbled on Swedish biscuits, the sky once again erupted in a symphony of colors. The Aurora danced above us, a breathtaking display that seemed to stretch on forever. Cristina’s knowledge of the stars added another layer to the experience, as she pointed out constellations and shared stories of the night sky.
As the night drew to a close, I reflected on the experience. The Arctic, with its harsh beauty and unforgiving climate, had once again captured my heart. The Northern Lights, a testament to the wonders of our natural world, had left an indelible mark on my soul. This journey, guided by the expertise and passion of Cristina and her team, was a reminder of the magic that exists in the world, waiting to be discovered by those willing to brave the cold.
