Batwa Trail - Visitors to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park have the opportunity to experience the Batwa culture by signing up for the Batwa Trail Experience. Unlike the Batwa Community Experience, which occurs in the villages, the Batwa Trail activity offers a glimpse into the historical lifestyles of this marginalized community from the perspective of ancient forest life.
The Batwa Trail tour, which starts at the Ntebeko park headquarters of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, takes 4-5 hours. The cultural tour is guided by trained Batwa guides who showcase cultural norms such as harvesting herbs for medicine and wild honey, their old ways of fetching water using bamboo made “mugs” and construction demo of grass thatched huts. The Batwa Trail ends with a cultural show/dance by the Batwa families at the Garama cave entrance, a ceremonial ground for Batwa cultural leaders. The cave was such a symbolic place in the Batwa culture, and you will be proud to be part of this experience.
