Around 500 years ago, a Samurai warrior named Ota Dokan constructed a castle in Akabane, marking the beginning of Tokyo.

The inaugural Akabane Baka Matsuri (Akabane Fool’s Festival) took place on April 1, 1956, organized by local shop owners to honor Dokan’s remarkable achievements and to “bring a festival to the residents of Akabane as well.”

The festival kicks off with marching performances, followed by fool dancing, cosplay, portable shrines, and a variety of other groups. It is one of the largest events in Tokyo, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
