Unveiling Kitulgala’s Hidden Gems: A Journey Through Time and Culture
Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Central Province, Kitulgala is a treasure trove of history and culture waiting to be explored. As the rain gently taps on the lush canopy above, the overcast skies create an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue, perfect for delving into the region’s rich past. On January 19th, embark on a thrilling adventure to the Belilena Cave and Belilena Cave Tour to uncover the secrets of prehistoric times.
The Belilena Cave, a site of profound archaeological significance, offers a captivating journey into Sri Lanka’s distant past. As you trek through the verdant jungles, the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and the sound of rustling leaves. The cave’s interior, adorned with fascinating rock formations and underground streams, transports you to another era. Here, you’ll discover fossils and skeletal remains over 10,000 years old, including the renowned ‘Balangoda Man.’ This ancient human species, unique to Sri Lanka, offers a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors.
A recent review from July 31, 2023, captures the essence of this adventure:
“Through Tea estates and Rubber plantations and finally a Waterfall !!!! - The BELILENA Caves were home to the BELIGONDA man. Occupied by Prehistoric homosapiens 35,000 years ago, these caves carry a lot of history. The walk to the caves is very pleasant and fun. Winding through Tea estates and runner plantations one can spot a wide variety of birds and spiders and flowers. Lots of mini waterfalls en-route. The caves itself are hidden behind a wide waterfall – almost feels like a surreal set from the PHANTOM comics!!!!! The taxi will drop you off at the edge of the Katilgala Jungle. You have the option of taking a ‘Tuk-Tuk’. The Tuk-Tuk will take you to the border of the estate, beyond which you have to trek on foot. We opted to WALK throughout and politely refused the Tuk-Tuk that had been arranged. We enjoyed the long walk. When we ran out of water, we simply filled our bottles from the clear jungle stream flowing along the path!!!! My suggestion – Its perfect for those who love to explore the greenery.” (Reviewed at: 2023-07-31)
