From 1963 to 1978, it was the deployment site for four medium-range SS-4 ballistic missiles, each equipped with 2-megaton thermonuclear warheads. In conjunction with nearby land-based missile launch platforms, these formed a unified Soviet nuclear weapon cluster in Lithuania capable of annihilating the whole of Europe.
