Nusa Penida Snorkeling Tour: Expansive Freediving and Encounter with Manta Rays

Experience an expansive freediving adventure and encounter majestic manta rays on a snorkeling tour in Nusa Penida. Join professional instructors and explore three stunning snorkeling points near Nusa Penida, including Manta Point, Gamat Bay or Toyapakeh Wall, and SD Point.

Duration: 4 hours
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights
  • Freedive Nusa - Freediving School - We meet at the school (Freedive Nusa on Google Maps) at 10 am, give you all the equipment (including wetsuits and long fins if needed), and provide a detailed briefing about manta rays, organization aspects, and safety. Then a boat will pick us up right from the school at 10:30 am. Our professional freediving instructors will be on the boat as in-water guides.

We will visit Manta Point, Toyapakeh Wall, SD Point. If there are no mantas in Manta Point, we can also visit Manta Bay on the way back. The route and meeting time might be adjusted to weather conditions.

Please, understand this is wild nature and nobody can promise you to see manta rays. Our crew and instructors always do their best to find mantas but we definitely can’t guarantee them.

Also, please, be mindful that the water might be very choppy! We recommend having a very light breakfast and taking a seasickness tablet in the morning (we will provide it). You should feel confident enough to swim in the open ocean affected by swell and waves.

We have safety boxes, therefore you can leave some of your belongings there. After the trip, you can take a hot shower and use towels.

Additional Information

There are 2 main spots where you can see manta rays in Nusa Penida - Manta Bay and Manta Point.

The first one is the closest and most of the snorkeling trips are going there. Usually, it is very chaotic and messy, there are a lot of people and boats.

The further spot is Manta Point. It’s a much longer journey but you might get more chances to see mantas and fewer people.

Manta Point is much more recommended and this is what we offer in our trips.

The trip is guided by professional freediving instructors!

On this half-day trip, we will bring you to 3 different and very attractive snorkeling points near Nusa Penida.

Point #1. Manta Point
Freediving and snorkeling with Manta Rays. Manta Rays can usually be seen right from the surface.

Point #2. Gamat Bay or Toyapakeh Wall
Coral gardens at shallow depths between 2-5 meters or drift along underwater wall.

Point #3. SD Point
Relaxed drifting along colorful corals. High chance to see turtles.

Location
Freedive Nusa - Freediving School
Jalan Ped - Buyuk
The trip starts from Nusa Penida island, not from the Bali mainland! You have to come to Nusa Penida on your own a day before the trip or on the same day by the first speedboat from Sanur. The Freedive Nusa is located at Nusa Penida in the village called Desa Ped in front of Coco Penida Cafe.

Highlight of our trip - Easy to book the trip. You will get on a boat with a small group of around 5-10 people instead of 20-30 like the other diving schools. The instructors seaech some spots which are not as crowded as the classical ones. We saw about 10 mantas and had them for ourselfs. The instructors are encouraged to give you the best experience. Keep it on you to do list at Nusa!

A Memorable Highlight of our Trip - Our freedive and snorkelling trip was fantastic! Our guides Roberto and Gaston were really helpful and kind, especially for us as first time freedivers. All the equipment was ready and well-organised when we got there and I loved that they provided sea-sickness tablets and ginger tea on the journey. Manta Point was amazing and we saw heaps of mantas. I appreciated that our guides advised us how to approach and treat the mantas so that they would feel safe. It is clear other tour groups do not do this and I was happy that our guides took the protection of the mantas seriously, even stopping people who tried to touch them. The other stops were beautiful and we even saw a turtle. It was an amazing day all round and I would recommend it to everyone. We also got professional photos by Gaston and that was worth it too.

Amazing Tour with excellent guide! - We had such an amazing time at Free Dive Nusa participating in the manta ray tour! We had picked this particular company as we wanted a more ethical way of swimming with the manta! We had Ray as our tour guide.. he was so friendly and welcoming! He sat us down beforehand for a short briefing, which allowed us to learn a bit more about what we would see the manta rays doing. He also taught us how to be respectful of these animals, and how we would position ourselves to minimise disruption of their natural environment. We saw so many manta and had the best time! Ray also took some really cool photos and videos on my GoPro for me! Additionally, he taught us some extra skills in how to equalise underwater and swim further! We couldn’t recommend this tour more! It felt great knowing we were with a company that wants to protect the environment and I would definitely tour with them again in the future.

Amazing experience - Manta trip withFreedive Nusa Penida was amazing! 🤩 I enjoyed it so much, to see Mantas is unforgettable experience. Really magnificent animals 🔝 Photographer Gaston did awesome job and gave great advices. Whole team was doing perfect job. I would recommend this company 100%. Also appreciate that you care about nature and you don’t do crazy big crowded trips with many people without advices just to make most money.. I saw some companies doing this trip like tourist trap.. One more time thank you very much! Hope to visit Nusa Penida in future and make some another trip with you or try freediving school ✊🏼

Amazing experience! - Had two amazing freedive trips. Both days we saw many mantas and we had so much fun snorkeling on the reef to. Great guides who look out after everyone. We really liked this company took care of the wild life by informing the participants very well about the mantas. Unlike other companies in the water who didn’t respect the boundaries of the mantas. Would definitely recommend and would come back again. Great value for your money.

Experience of a Lifetime - Miracles do happen and Freedive made it happen for me. Hi. I am a water phobic ( and obviously non swimmer who drops in the water like a stone) girl, and Tony ( our freedive guide) not only took away my water fear but also made me fall in love with the beauty of all of it. Me and my husband went for snorkeling and we cannot thank the team enough for paying such special attention on us and taking such good care of us. They were very cool, polite and fun to be with. Absolutely worth the money. This is the best purchase we ever made. Would recommend freedive services to everyone who is visiting Nusa Penida and especially if you are a non swimmer like me.

Highlight of our Bali trip - Really well organised snorkelling trip. We stayed on Penids & walked to the free dive centre departure point. Before we left we were given clear instructions & had a good understanding of what to expect. The boat ride around the island was exhilarating & offered spectacular views of the coast. We had ample time in the water & were lucky to see not one, not two.. but 10 manta rays ! Definitely recommend.

Raja Ampat Trip - We did the Raja Ampat trip and it was a great experience, we really recommend freedive Nusa. The trip was well organised (accommodations, boat trips, line training) and we were able to enjoy the trip 100%. Kirill and Hamza know the area and are very experienced freedive instructors We would travel with freedive Nusa again. The trip is also suitable for freedive beginners. Thank you very much!

Mantas were fabulous but tour expensive and dubious - Very busy spot to see Mantas, and a time change due to tides made it very difficult for us to meet the revised start time and they almost left without us. You would think the tide times were known before? Also Viator made a mistake suggesting this one when I asked for a Scuba diving experience and I mistakenly booked it.
