Knossos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with remains dating back to around 7000 BC found throughout Crete. Discover the ruins of the ancient Minoan civilization at Knossos Palace, which boasted 1,300 rooms connected by corridors, a theater, and extensive storerooms that held large clay containers of oil, grains, dried fish, beans, and olives, often with gold hidden beneath. The site was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, and excavations began in 1900 AD by the English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and his team, continuing for 35 years.
