Chinese Fishing Nets - Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net found in India. These nets are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as “Chinese fishing nets” in India, the formal term for these nets is shore-operated lift nets. Large mechanical structures hold horizontal nets that span 20 meters or more. Each structure stands at least 10 meters high and includes a cantilever with an outstretched net over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although these nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in the cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This fishing method is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, having been introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century.
