Chinese Fishing Nets - Known locally as Cheena vala, these stationary lift nets are a distinctive fishing method in India. These nets are fixed land installations, formally referred to as “shore operated lift nets.” Massive mechanical structures support horizontal nets spanning 20 meters or more. Each setup, standing at least 10 meters high, features a cantilever with a net extended over the water and large stones hanging from ropes as counterweights. Operated by teams of up to six fishermen, these nets are prevalent along the coasts of southern China and Indochina, but in India, they are mainly found in Kochi and Kollam, where they attract tourists. This unique fishing technique was introduced to the region by Chinese explorers in the 14th century.
