Lunuganga Garden Tour - Your itinerary begins with a visit to Bawa’s estate in Lunuganga. Sir Geoffrey Bawa, a distinguished lawyer turned architect, made this estate his countryside retreat from 1947 until his passing in 1998. During his time there, he used the estate as a laboratory for his architectural and interior design experiments. Visitors can now explore the beautifully crafted gardens, which are open to the public. Some of the estate’s buildings have been converted into a country house hotel. The tour of the estate lasts approximately two hours.
Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - Balapitiya, a small southern town situated in marshy wetlands, is a biodiversity hotspot that thrives on the lagoon formed by the Madu River as it meets the Indian Ocean. Your safari will take you along the river, where you’ll see dense mangrove forests and the wildlife that inhabits their roots. The guide will also take you to some of the larger islands in the Madu River, including one with an ancient Buddhist monastery. The primary occupation in this area is cinnamon harvesting.
Another highlight of the safari is the renowned fish massage. This unique ‘massage parlor’ is a hut on stilts in the middle of the river, with a netted area containing ‘massage fish.’ You’ll sit on the hut’s deck with your feet in the water, allowing the fish to work their magic.
Meetiyagoda - Situated in southern Sri Lanka, Meetiyagoda is famous for its distinctive moonstone mines. These gleaming semi-precious stones, known for their iridescent glow, are extracted here amidst lush greenery. Visitors can observe the traditional mining techniques and purchase stunning moonstone jewelry, making it a haven for gem enthusiasts.
