Embracing the Wild: A Day at Udawalawe
Koggala, a serene coastal town in Sri Lanka, offers a perfect blend of cultural richness and wildlife exploration. As the sun rises on March 8th, the weather is inviting for an adventure into the wild. With temperatures peaking at a comfortable 82.5°F, it’s an ideal day to embark on the Udawalawe Safari and witness the majestic elephants in their natural habitat. The safari begins early in the morning, with pick-up times starting at 4:30 AM, ensuring you catch the wildlife at its most active.
The Udawalawe National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. As you traverse the park in a safari jeep, the sight of elephants roaming freely is a spectacle to behold. The park’s diverse ecosystem is home to a variety of species, including vibrant birds, elusive crocodiles, and playful monkeys. The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly the visit to the Elephant Transit Home, where you can witness the heartwarming sight of baby elephants being fed. A recent review from August 2024 captures the essence of this experience:
The best safari experience! - Right from the pickup to the drop off everything was arranged so well and was perfectly executed by the team. We were picked up on time from our Airbnb and taken directly to the safari. Our guide was super helpful and could spot birds, lizards, elephants, crocodiles from far off and he made best of efforts to ensure we saw all of them up close. After that we were taken to the most cutest thing to watch - elephant milk feeding time at their rehabilitation centre! We also walked around the elephant museum and learnt a lot about the animal. Finally we ended the trip with a perfect Sri Lankan style lunch. 100% recommend!! (Reviewed at: 2024-08-18)
As the day progresses, the park’s landscape transforms under the afternoon sun, offering a picturesque backdrop for your adventure. Remember to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen, as the UV index is high. The safari concludes with a delightful Sri Lankan lunch, leaving you with memories of a day well spent in the wild.
Cultural Immersion: Koggala Lake and Temples
On March 9th, the weather remains favorable for exploration, with temperatures reaching up to 87.8°F. This is the perfect day to delve into the cultural treasures of Koggala. Begin your journey with the Koggala Lake and Temple Tour, starting at 9:00 AM. The tour takes you on a serene boat ride across Koggala Lake, where the tranquil waters reflect the lush greenery and vibrant wildlife.
The lake is a sanctuary for birdwatchers, with a plethora of avian species gracing the skies. As you glide across the water, the sight of monkeys frolicking on the banks and the occasional glimpse of a crocodile adds an element of thrill to the experience. The tour also includes visits to two remarkable temples: the Weherahena Poorwarama Temple and the Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya. These temples are not just places of worship but also architectural marvels that offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
The Japanese Peace Pagoda, a symbol of tranquility, is another highlight of the tour. Perched atop Rumassala Hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect spot for reflection and meditation. A recent review from September 2023 highlights the tour’s appeal:
