Highlights
  • Kolkata Heritage Tram Tours - Greet your private guide outside Esplanade metro station at 5pm and catch the train up to a district little visited by foreigners and known for its cuisine.

When you disembark, you’ll dive straight in with an exotic lasse found at a local street vendor before hopping into a tiny joint that’s been whipping up some of the best masala curries in Kolkata for more than a century. As you eat, your guide will tell you stories of old Calcutta.

Jump aboard a local bus for a short journey up to one of Kolkata’s most celebrated seafood restaurants where you’ll try their signature jumbo prawn covered in chingri coconut cream sauce and a mouth-watering curried fish mousse steamed in a banana leaf. After leaving you’ll clamber aboard one of the old rickshaws, the only place where these wooden carts still exist in India and take a short tour of the area en route to the next foodie stop. Gorge on a prawn kabiraji at a legendary kitchen started by a Scot in the 19th century.

Kolkata might seem busy, but your guide will take you on a walk down through a peaceful district pointing out temples and local life along the way. As you meander the backstreets of old Kolkata, you’ll try tasty titbits from the city’s most famous onion bhajis to zingy gram salads made from herbs and pulses.

Sip on local ginger infused chai tea before jumping on board one of the old trams that have been plying the streets of Kolkata for over a century for a short journey to College Street. Here, piles of school book sellers are passed by university students on their way back from lectures. Drop into a local cafe to sample a famed coconut sherbet drink and then dive into Bengali treats at a nearby sweet shop.

The evening finishes in the faded grandeur of old colonial coffee shop where students are busy debating, ceiling fans whirl overhead and waiters serve coffees in traditional garb.

This isn’t just a foodie tour, it’s a tour into the heart of Kolkata.

A treat for the eyes and the tummy - It was a wonderful experience getting into the non-touristy side of Calcutta and eating our way through old Cal. It was an evening tour and so well-thought out.

Absolutely loved the food, various modes of transport, Avik’s very fascinating information on the city and culture! - It was a perfectly designed tour which covered all kinds of food, balanced with a brief lesson on Kolkata’s history. We travelled by 3 major modes of public transport in the city and walked in the bylanes of Old Calcutta. The food was absolutely delicious and covered all kinds of ground and flavour palettes!

Unique experience of kolkata - Highly recommended and memorable tour especially if you have a short time in Kolkata and want to experience something beyond touristy spots. Avik the guide is very knowledgeable about the neighborhoods we visited, history and philosophy and enjoyed the wide ranging conversation as we wandered through. The food at each location was delicious; meticulously selected by Avik with the criteria that most of these places had been serving top notch dishes for over 100 years - as a solo female traveller, i definitely would not have been bravehearted going off the beaten path to discover them otherwise! It was also fun to experience the different modes of public transport and even randomly walk into a local barbershop; poke our noses into a traditional sweet-making kitchen. I also commend that Avik ensured that no food went to waste, packing them up and immediately handing to the many hungry street dwellers along the way.

Amazing (not only) food tour - This was an amazing experience. Our tour guide was wonderful, he gave us so much information not only about the food, but the different areas, traditions and answered all the questions we had. The food was well picked, delicious and the vegetarian option great and tasty. I highly recommend this tour.

Truly an experience to have in Kolkata - Avik was an amazing guide. We went all over the city and had many superb foods, sights, sounds and forms of transportation. From classic street food to amazing dishes that made your senses come alive. It was quite warm during the day but doing the tour in the evening made it nice. We enjoyed hearing all about the culture as we toured. Avik is full of knowledge and he always kept us informed about what we were seeing and doing and the context of it all. Wonderful experience.

Great way to explore Kolkata - Our guide had a wealth of knowledge not just about the food but about the city as well. A chefs tour gave us inaight into a part of kolkata that would have otherwise gone unexplored by us. When you sign up you not just get great food, but a cultural and historical tour as well

Good food but crazy guide - Good food, worth every penny. Hidden places were covered. The guide was rude, partial & very commanding.
