- St John’s Church - Begin the day with a 09:00 AM pick-up from the hotel to visit St John’s Church. Known as Stone Church or Pathure Girja, this historic site in Kolkata, West Bengal, takes visitors back to the colonial era.
St. John’s Church is among the oldest in the city, constructed when Kolkata served as the British capital. It was the Anglican cathedral from 1815 until 1847, when St. Paul’s Cathedral assumed the title.
Following this, explore Dalhousie Square, now called Binoy Badal Dinesh Bagh, named after three revolutionary freedom fighters of Bengal. This area was the hub of power and administration during British rule and remains the central business district of Eastern India, housing numerous important institutions, financial establishments, and corporations.
- Victoria Memorial Hall - Next, visit the Victoria Memorial, a stunning architectural masterpiece. Situated in the heart of Kolkata, it stands as a testament to colonial grandeur.
The white marble monument is a symbol of magnificence, captivating visitors with its beauty. Conceived by Lord George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India, it serves as a stately memorial to the late Queen Victoria, the first Empress of British India.
- St. Paul’s Cathedral - St Paul’s Cathedral is recognized as the first Episcopal Church in the eastern world. This Anglican cathedral of the Church of North India is not only a religious site but also an architectural wonder. Measuring 247 feet in length, 81 feet in width, and 114 feet at the transept, its flagstaff reaches 175 feet above ground. The cathedral took eight years to build at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs (Five Hundred Thousand rupees) and was consecrated by Bishop Wilson on 8th October 1847.
- Kalighat Kali Temple - The Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata is considered the holiest of the 52 Shakti Peethams in India, where parts of Sati’s body are believed to have fallen during Shiva’s Rudra Tandava.
- The Mother House Of The Missionaries Of Charity - Visit Mother Teresa House and Orphanage, a place of pilgrimage rather than a tourist attraction. The Mother House in Kolkata is a sacred and tranquil site, drawing thousands of visitors worldwide.
Founded in 1950, the Mother House serves the underprivileged and poorest of the poor. Members of the congregation take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, along with a fourth vow of providing “wholehearted selfless and free service to the poorest among the poor.”
- Potters lane - Later, stroll through Kumartuli Potter’s Lane. This potters’ colony in Kolkata produces numerous clay statues and idols year-round. The name derives from the Bengali words ‘kumhor’ (potter) and ‘tuli’ (small space). As old as Kolkata itself, Kumartuli was established by the East India Company, dividing areas by profession.
The winding lanes are lined with workshops and countless figures and statues. Artisans here have practiced their craft for generations, maintaining a 300-year-old tradition since the East India Company era.
- Howrah Bridge - Conclude the tour with a visit to Howrah Bridge, a balanced cantilever bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. Commissioned in 1943, it was initially named the New Howrah Bridge, replacing a pontoon bridge that connected Howrah and Kolkata.
