• Odigitria Gonia Monastery - The monastery, known as Lady of the Angels Monastery of Gonia, earns its name from its strategic position at the western corner of Chania Bay.

Throughout history, Gonia Monastery played a pivotal role, serving as a sanctuary for Cretan rebels and enduring repeated destruction by various conquerors.

Enclosed within imposing walls reminiscent of a Venetian fortress, the complex centers around the temple dedicated to the Virgin Hodhegetria, celebrated on August 15th. Additionally, the monastery boasts numerous auxiliary buildings such as monk cells, an abbey, dining quarters, storage facilities. Notably, it is also home to the Orthodox Academy of Crete.

Distinguished individuals have held the position of monastery abbot, including Misael Apostolidis, renowned as the Greek language tutor to King Otto and the inaugural rector of the University of Athens.

• To visit the Monastery, you must wear modest clothes: for women – skirt/dress under your knees and covered shoulders, for a man – trousers, T-shirt with long sleeves.
