Komshtitsa - Komshtitsa is a village renowned in Bulgaria for its significant presence of belemnites, squid-like creatures, shells, and ammonites. Historically, this area was densely populated. Thracian tribes originally settled here, and the Romans later constructed a fortress and roads connecting Naisus to what is now Western Bulgaria.
During the Bulgarian Revival, Komshtitsa emerged as a hub for craftsmanship and gained fame for its dairies. The region was also a battleground between Bulgaria and Serbia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The journey to Komshtitsa takes approximately 1.5 hours. The tour begins at the village’s edge, where participants will traverse dirt roads, circling the peak known as “Kaleto.”
Along the way, visitors can observe Jurassic period fossils and remnants of ancient fortifications. Before re-entering the village, there is an opportunity to view an old cemetery from the late 19th century, showcasing the evolution of cross designs.

For those attracted to calming walks through the countryside, far from urban clamor, this excursion is perfect. We will roam the remnants of an age-old sea, once ruled by shellfish and marine life. Immerse yourself in the narrative of nature and interact with a piece of history. As dinosaur kingdoms were emerging, the majority of what is now Bulgarian territory lay beneath the ocean. Fast forward 150 million years and that sea has transformed into Ponor mountain. The karst mountain now showcases limestone from the Triassic and Jurassic periods.
