The journey begins in the ancient town of Dhauli, a pivotal location in Emperor Ashoka’s transformation from a fierce ruler to a peace-loving Buddhist. Situated by the River Daya, Dhauli is the site of the legendary Kalinga War, fought in 261 B.C. After the war, Emperor Ashoka surveyed his kingdom and was moved by the sight of the battlefield’s aftermath, leading him to embrace Buddhism. In 1972, Japanese and Indian Buddhists constructed a peace pagoda (shanti-stupa) at the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha. Dhauli is also renowned for its small rock-cut caves and ancient Hindu temples, notably the Dhavalesvara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The tour’s highlight is the captivating Sun Temple of Konark, our next destination. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 13th century by King Narsingha Deva, is designed as a colossal chariot drawn by seven horses. The chariot rests on twelve intricately carved wheels, symbolizing the 12 months of the year (or 24 hours of the day, according to some legends), while the seven horses represent the days of the week. Rabindranath Tagore described this magnificent temple as “poetry in stone.” After this enlightening experience, you will be returned to your hotel, concluding your tour.
