- Corinth Canal - The Isthmus of Corinth is a slender land bridge linking mainland Greece with the Peloponnese, separating the Aegean Sea from the Ionian Sea. It has held significant strategic value since ancient times. Completed in 1893, the Corinth Canal cuts through the isthmus, allowing ships to bypass the lengthy and perilous route around the Peloponnese. The canal stretches approximately 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) in length, 21 meters (70 feet) in width, and is carved through steep limestone cliffs. Although it is too narrow for modern large ships, it remains a favored passage for smaller vessels and tourist cruises. The Isthmus has been pivotal in Greek history, trade, and transportation, and the canal is celebrated as a remarkable achievement of 19th-century engineering. A 30-minute stop here will provide an opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view and capture photos from the Isthmus Bridge.
- The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is one of the best-preserved classical Greek theaters and a marvel of ancient architecture. Constructed in the 4th century BC by the architect Polykleitos the Younger, it is situated in the sanctuary of Asklepios in the Peloponnese. The theater is famous for its outstanding acoustics and balanced proportions. With a seating capacity of around 14,000, it was originally used for musical and dramatic performances in honor of the healing god Asklepios. Even today, a whisper on stage can be distinctly heard in the highest seats. The theatre continues to host performances, particularly during the annual Epidaurus Festival, drawing audiences from across the globe. It stands as a testament to the artistic and engineering prowess of ancient Greece. A one-hour stop here will allow time to explore the Ancient Theatre and the Museum of Epidaurus.
- Archaeological Site of Cenchreae - Kenchreai served as the eastern port of ancient Corinth, located on the Saronic Gulf. It was crucial to Corinth’s trade network, linking the city to the Aegean Sea and the broader Mediterranean region. The port flourished particularly during the Roman era, acting as a hub for merchants, travelers, and religious pilgrims. Archaeological digs have uncovered warehouses, temples, villas, and a Christian basilica, providing insights into the daily life and multicultural character of the settlement. Kenchreai is also mentioned in the New Testament as the location where the Apostle Paul had his hair cut before traveling to Syria (Acts 18:18). Today, visitors can explore the ruins near the modern village of Kechries, where remnants of breakwaters and ancient structures still stand by the sea, reflecting the harbor’s rich and prosperous history. A 30-minute stop here will allow time to visit the ancient port ruins.
