Nisyros Volcano - Nisyros hosts Greece’s youngest volcano, which remains active like those at Methana, Milos Island, and Santorini Island. The island is largely mountainous, volcanic, and highly fertile, featuring volcanic rock formations from past eruptions. These rocks, including basalt, have been used in various structures such as the Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos near Nikia. The island’s landscape is shaped by lava, covered with pyroclastic deposits and volcanic mud. Two significant eruptions are believed to have occurred around 25,000 years ago. The largest crater, Polivotis, measures 260m in diameter and 30m in depth. There are five younger craters, with the largest being Stefanos, which is 30m in diameter and 30m deep. The surrounding valley stretches 2,400m in length and 950m in width.
