Highlights
  • Toyosu Market - Toyosu Market (
) opened on October 11, 2018 on the man-made island of Toyosu in the Bay of Tokyo. It took over the wholesale business from the aging Tsukiji Market and provides tourists with an opportunity to observe the market action and to dine at restaurants across its large, modern premises.

The huge wholesale market consists of three main buildings: two buildings for seafood and one for fruits and vegetables. All buildings are connected with each other and Shijo-mae Station via walkways, and tourists can enter them along dedicated routes and view the action from observation windows that look onto the auction and wholesale halls for tuna, other seafood and produce.

This tour does not include tuna auction viewing.

Go with a local who can explain about the various ingredients and preparation methods - We had the tour today with Naoko, a young Japanese Biology major with a passion for English. It was very helpful to have her along for the explanations about the amazing variety of food and kitchen accessories. She also explained how many of the ingredients are used to create the Japanese dishes. Friendly and with an excellent English, she was a great guide.

Excellent guide and itinerary to visit the Toyosu and Tsukiji fish markets. - We had a wonderful guide Koji. He sent messages before the trip. He picked us up at the hotel. He explained everything and even helped us to get our IC cards recharged. He is knowledgeable, kind and very thorough. I will recommend him.

Great day out - Lily was a fabulous guide. We were so daunted by the train system. Lily helped us with the Suica card and it was plain sailing from there. The food was amazing. Lily had a depth of knowledge that made the market interesting. Take cash - a lot of it. Especially if waghu is your thing.

Great tour, even better guide! - We had the best time on our tour of the Tsukiji market. Our guide, Yamasan, was wonderful! He made our day stress-free, informative and fun. Our family really appreciated the insights and support from Yamasan before our trip, as well as during. Having traveled quite a bit and enjoyed many tours through Viator, we have never had a guide go out of their way to welcome us to the city by leaving materials for us at our hotel in advance to ensure we were able to find our way. Additionally, we will always cherish the origami gift that Yamasan provided. Not doubt we will remember the tour, the food, the experience, but also our guide. Thank you for bringing joy to our trip and making our day at the market a highlight!

Best way to start your day in Toyosu and Tsukiji markets - What a lovely morning we spent touring the fish markets. Miya picked us up at our hotel at 6am and ensured that we were able to see everything we requested. Miya is very knowledgeable about the fishing industry and the process of the tuna auction. We even received a short tutorial on the hand signals used by the tuna buyers to bid on each fish. Top that off with a visit to a hidden gem for coffee, tea and treats. Miya was so helpful and kind. Thanks so much for your professional support!

I do not recommend this tour at all - I do not recommend this tour at all. The guide seemed to be in a rush and just walked us from place to place without explaining us anything. We met at our hotel and took the subway to the market. He first walked us to Toyosu and showed us the auction hall rather quickly, he didn’t say much and didn’t give us a lot of time to read the descriptions on the walls. Then he walked us to the intermediary market, but again just walked us there without saying much else, no time to read on our own. Then he took us to the food stalls where we were hoping he would recommend good stalls or at least tell us about the food, but that was not the case. Then we took the subway to Tsukiji, where he essentially showed us where the market was and left. We would have been better off wandering around the markets by ourselves, which is what we ended up doing. Understand that his English was very poor so it was hard to communicate with him, but I did expect so much more for the price I paid. Save your money and go on your own terms, you’ll get the same experience and it’ll be less frustrating!
