They have been written by VIATOR staff who have never been on this tour. We have repeatedly asked them to change the text to reflect this tour and they say they can not. - Sham Shui Po District - This is a tour about ‘The Dark Side’ of Hong Kong. We explore Kowloon discovering some of the ‘darker’ topics; poverty, triads, prostitution, grey markets.
Your tour starts in Sham Shi Po, the least affluent district in Hong Kong. Don’t come here for a fancy gourmet meal. Instead, come here if you want to try Michelin-recommended noodles and snacks that won’t make a dent in your pocket.
Here your local guide will take you on a street food tour to discover the best local eats and introduce you to the local culture and living environment.
We cover between 4 and 6 food stops on every tour. Tour itineraries and stops might differ depending on several factors such as your interests, the walking pace, and weather, etc. We try to include two Michelin-rated Bib Gourmand eats on every tour. (This is not a Michelin star food tour as Vaitor describes it - Viator refuses to remove that description even though we have told them it is misrepresenting our tour).
- Mongkok - Moving on from Sham Shui Po we head to Mongkok, a district famous for its shopping, markets, and glimmering neon lights. One of the most densely populated parts of the world Mongkok is every amateur photographer’s dream.
You will explore the bustling streets of Mong Kok with your tour guide, taking in the famous Goldfish Market and electronics streets. We will explain what is going on inside the masses of high-rise buildings surrounding the markets. Prostitution, illegal gambling, and subdivided living are all rife. This is your insight into the ‘dark side’ of Hong Kong. But don’t worry, there is nothing dangerous about our exploration, Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world and Mong Kok is one of its top tourist destinations; you’re just getting the inside scoop on what lies beneath the surface!
** We may pass through different markets in Mongkok depending on your interests, the walking pace, the weather, etc
- Chung King Mansion - From the gritty and frantic streets of Mong Kok, we make our way to the more glamorous district of Tsim Sha Tsui on the peninsula of Kowloon.
Chung King Mansions launched as a beacon of prosperity in the jet-set era of Hong Kong. The building’s fame slid into notoriety soon after, and it has lived for 60 years in the spotlight. Many Hong Kong people avoid it, given its reputed sleazy underbelly. A social scientist wrote a book about the building after conducting a 3-year study on it and the thousands of people that pass through it every day. We will talk about the building and its fascinating story.
Tour itineraries and stops might differ depending on several factors such as your interests, the walking pace, and weather, etc.
- The Peninsula Hong Kong - The Peninsula Hong Kong — or ‘The Pen’ as it is known locally — is a Hong Kong landmark. A witness to the city’s eventful history, the hotel has been serving guests in style since 1928. This beautiful art deco building holds its own dark story which will be discussed.
- Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade - Our tour ends at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront which offers exceptional views of the Hong Kong skyline. Here we relax and discuss the history and development of the Hong Kong skyline from the early 1800s to the present day. Depending on the time of our tour you may be able to watch the Hong Kong light show which runs every day at 8 pm.
